Huang Zhi Xiang Dan Cong is a distinctive Oolong tea from Phoenix Mountain in Chaozhou, whose name literally means “Yellow Branch Aroma.”

This classic Phoenix Oolong tea is well-known locally but relatively rare on the market, making it a high-quality tea with excellent value.

Phoenix Mountain, a representative of Guangdong in China’s four core Oolong tea-producing regions, has preserved a centuries-old tradition of harvesting and processing tea from individual plants—hence the term “Dan Cong.”

The volcanic, nutrient-rich soil nurtures a variety of tea cultivars, and local farmers classify and name teas based on aroma and leaf appearance, creating the unique diversity of Phoenix Dan Cong Oolong teas.

Understanding Huang Zhi Xiang

Huang Zhi Xiang (Yellow Branch Aroma) is key to understanding the Phoenix Dan Cong classification system.

Its name has a dual meaning:

  • It can refer specifically to the “Huang Zhi Xiang” tea cultivar.
  • Or it can refer more broadly to one of the ten recognized aroma types, characterized by gardenia and honey notes.
  • Some of the region’s top-tier teas, such as Dong Fang Hong (Eastern Red) and Song Zhong, belong to this aroma type.

Cultivar vs Aroma Type

Through interactions with customers at Chinese Tea Group’s brick-and-mortar tea shops, we found that many tea enthusiasts still confuse “cultivar” and “aroma type.”

Even some sellers find these distinctions subtle, highlighting the importance of deeper knowledge for discerning buyers.

Aroma and Value

Huang Zhi Xiang Dan Cong Tea offers exceptional value.

Its aroma is gentler than varieties such as Ya Shi Xiang (Duck Shit Aroma) or Da Wu Ye (Big Dark Leaf).

It also lacks the extended aging potential of cultivars like Mi Lan Xiang (Honey Orchid Aroma) or Zhi Lan Xiang (Orchid Aroma).

As a result, it has not been overhyped in the market, making it a high-quality tea that retains the authentic Huang Zhi Xiang character while remaining reasonably priced and well-loved locally.

Even top-tier Dan Cong teas in this category are ultimately classified under the Huang Zhi Xiang aroma type.

Roasting and Optimal Drinking Period

Huang Zhi Xiang has a flavor and aroma profile that falls between light and strong, commonly described as “medium-strong aroma.”

After being fully roasted, its optimal drinking period is usually within two years of production.

2025 Tea Information

Our Huang Zhi Xiang Dan Cong – Classic Phoenix Oolong Tea – Yellow Branch Aroma was handpicked in spring and fully roasted in September 2025.

The dry leaves are dark and glossy, releasing a distinct gardenia fragrance.

When brewed, the leaves turn golden, and the liquor is smooth, with floral and honey notes harmoniously blended.

Drinking Period and Aroma Development

Based on our experience, this tea will maintain its peak aroma and character over the next year.

As it approaches the final year of its prime drinking period:

  • Floral notes may soften slightly.
  • Honeyed aroma will become more pronounced, producing a warmer, sweet, and lingering finish.

Why Choose Huang Zhi Xiang Dan Cong?

  • Authentic Huang Zhi Xiang tea cultivar, not a blended aroma type
  • Medium-strong roast, balanced and refined
  • Excellent value, reasonably priced while preserving authentic flavor
  • Floral and honey notes blended, smooth and rounded liquor
  • Suitable for both new tea enthusiasts and experienced connoisseurs
