This tea sample is the ancestor of black tea—Lapsang Souchong (Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong)—originating in the mid-16th century in the Wuyi Mountain region of Fujian Province, China. Renowned as the oldest black tea, it holds a prestigious place in the history of Chinese tea.
Characteristics
- The name "Zheng Shan" means "authentic Wuyi Mountain," while "Xiao Zhong" refers to the "small-leaf tea trees" used to craft this tea.
- Made using a traditional process that includes picking, withering, rolling, fermenting, and roasting. To adapt to long-distance transportation, it was historically processed with pinewood smoking, which imparts its iconic smoky aroma.
- The dried tea leaves are jet black, while the brewed leaves are reddish, soft, and bright. The tea liquor is amber-colored, crystal clear, and luminous.
- As a classic representative of Chinese black tea, Lapsang Souchong is highly acclaimed both domestically and internationally.
Flavor
- The signature smoky aroma from pinewood smoking creates a bold and distinctive flavor.
- The tea liquor is full-bodied, smooth, and slightly sweet, with layered notes of fruit and pinewood, offering a rich and memorable taste experience.
