Da Hong Pao Rock Tea, also known as Big Red Robe, is a premium oolong tea from Wuyi Mountain in Fujian, China, with a history dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties (1600–1700).

According to legend, a top scholar (Zhuangyuan) who was critically ill recovered after drinking this tea. To express his gratitude, he draped his red official robes over the tea bushes, which is how the tea got its name, Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe).

Wuyi Mountain Environment

The unique environment of Wuyi Mountain (also called Wuyi Shan), characterized by Danxia landforms and lush vegetation, provides ideal conditions for Da Hong Pao tea trees.

This mineral-rich soil imparts a distinctive “rock essence” (Yan Yun), making Da Hong Pao one of the most famous Wuyi Rock Teas.

Tea Farmers & Selection

As a traditional teahouse with many years of experience, we regard Da Hong Pao Oolong Tea as an indispensable classic among Wuyi Rock Teas.

Every year, we personally visit Wuyi Mountain. We learn about the altitudes of the tea gardens, the natural planting philosophies of the farmers, and the processing techniques of different tea factories. We also study how the year’s climate has affected the tea quality.

With this knowledge, we carefully select Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe) tea that is most respected and appreciated by local tea farmers and tea lovers.

Traditional Processing

Our 2024 best-selling Wuyi Rock Da Hong Pao is crafted using traditional Wuyi Oolong tea methods:

  1.  Sun-withering of fresh leaves
  2.  Tossing / Oxidation
  3.  Fixation (Kill-Green)
  4.  Rolling
  5.  High-fire roasting

This classic oolong tea improves with age: as it matures, its aroma deepens, and the tea liquor becomes smoother, more refined, and rich in rock flavor.

Tea Leaves & Brewing

The dry leaves are tightly rolled, exhibiting a dark charcoal-brown hue and a glossy finish, reflecting the distinctive weighty character of Wuyi Rock Tea.

When brewed, the tea liquor is clear and bright, with a translucent hue, releasing rich floral and fruity aromas with layered complexity. The taste is mellow and smooth, with a warm, balanced character, a long-lasting Yan Yun (rock rhyme), and lingering sweetness.
