Tie Guan Yin (Ti Kuan Yin, also known as Iron Goddess of Mercy) is one of the most famous Oolong teas. Its name originates from a legendary tale about a devout believer.
The tea’s authentic home is Anxi County in southeastern Fujian Province, where Tieguanyin has been cultivated and produced since the 18th century.
The name 'Tieguanyin' represents 'resilience and compassion,' reflecting both the rich cultural heritage of this Oolong tea and the spirit of its namesake.
According to legend, a humble farmer named Wei discovered an abandoned temple housing a statue of the Bodhisattva Guanyin. Despite his poverty, he faithfully cleaned the temple and offered incense regularly.
One night, Guanyin appeared in his dream and guided him to a hidden cave where a rare tea plant grew. Wei carefully cultivated this plant, which produced Tieguanyin tea leaves with an extraordinary aroma and rich flavor.
In gratitude to the Bodhisattva, he named the tea 'Tieguanyin.' The word '铁' (iron) symbolizes the tea’s strength and robustness, while '观音' (Guanyin) refers to the Goddess of Mercy, highlighting the spiritual inspiration behind this Oolong tea.
