This compressed tea cake is a 2025 spring Raw Pu-erh Tea (also known as Sheng Pu'er Tea) from Yunnan. The tea leaves were harvested from the renowned Hekai Village in Menghai County, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province.

Hekai comprises nine village groups (micro-regions) and is home to over 2.3 million ancient tea trees aged more than 100 years, covering approximately 2,635 acres (about 1,067 hectares). It has long been one of our key direct-sourcing regions for premium Pu-erh tea.

Harvest and Production

Each spring, our tea masters carefully select sun-dried tea leaves from large-leaf trees aged 100 to 300 years across Hekai’s nine village groups, blending them to produce this Sheng Pu-erh Tea cake. This series has been the top-selling Pu-erh tea in our physical tea houses and tea shops for seven consecutive years.

In 2025, to share this authentic Pu-erh tea cake made from ancient trees—highly favored by local tea enthusiasts—with tea lovers around the world, we specially pressed this batch into 100g mini cakes (instead of the usual 357g). This allows newcomers to Raw Pu-erh Tea or those curious about new flavors to enjoy a “small, low-risk” experience while still capturing the full essence of the tea.

Launch and Taste Profile

After a year of aging and taste evaluation, we officially launched this batch in May 2026 as the 2025 Raw Pu-erh Tea Cake. By this time, the tea cake has mellowed from its initial bitterness:

  • Sweet, mouth-watering entry
  • Strong tea energy
  • Refreshing sensation in the mouth

Note: For traditionally slow-maturing Sheng Pu-erh Tea, the first 3–5 years are still considered a transition from new tea to mid-aged tea, leaving ample room for future aging.

Learn Before You Buy

If you are new to Pu-erh tea and searching for “pu-erh tea where to buy,” it helps to first understand what authentic Pu-erh tea is.

Authentic Pu-erh Tea Requirements

True Pu-erh tea must meet the following criteria:

  1. Made from Yunnan large-leaf sun-dried green tea leaves
  2. Grown within the Geographical Indication (GI) protection area, covering:
  • 11 prefectures
  • 75 counties
  • 639 townships in Yunnan

      3.Processed using traditional techniques:

  • Spreading
  • Fixing
  • Rolling
  • Sun-drying
  • Steaming and pressing into cakes, resulting in Sheng Pu-erh Tea (traditional Raw Pu-erh Tea)

If a post-fermentation “wet piling” step is added before pressing, the result is Ripe Pu-erh Tea (Shou), which undergoes rapid fermentation to achieve a matured flavor.

Naming Conventions

  • In traditional tea circles or industry contexts, “Pu-erh tea” alone often refers to Raw Pu-erh Tea.
  • Ripe Pu-erh Tea is explicitly labeled as “Ripe (Shou) Tea.”

Aging and Storage

Once you understand these basics, you should also know that authentic Pu-erh tea improves with age. At the Chinese Tea Group, we periodically:

  • Release new batches
  • Rotate stock based on storage and aging conditions

This allows tea enthusiasts to:

  • Experience older aged teas
  • Compare flavor differences across vintages

We also believe that while tea grows every year, each year’s climate, leaf quality, and the tea master’s craftsmanship are unique and unrepeatable. That is why we have always kept a portion of tea in storage and maintain a stock of aged teas.

Availability and Collecting

Consequently, our Pu-erh tea cakes often sell out quickly. For many teas, we intentionally reserve some for further aging, much like collectors, anticipating the flavor development over the next:

  • Year
  • Several years
  • Decades
