The Legend of Lan Gu

According to local legend, more than a thousand years ago, a tea farmer named Lan Gu discovered wild tea trees in Hongxue Cave during a devastating epidemic. She processed the leaves using only natural sunlight and airflow, creating what is believed to be an early form of white tea and helping countless families. In gratitude, later generations honored her as Taimu Niangniang, and a statue commemorating her still stands on Mount Taimu today.

Why Mount Taimu Is Important for White Tea

Inspired by this legend, Mount Taimu is widely regarded as the birthplace and most important origin of Fuding white tea. Facing the sea, the mountain benefits from warm, moisture-rich ocean air meeting cool valley breezes, creating a unique environment of soft, diffused sunlight. This distinctive terroir contributes to unusually high amino acid levels in the tea leaves, resulting in remarkable sweetness, depth, and freshness. As shown in the product photos, after five years of natural aging, the leaves of this 2021 Fuding Bai Mu Dan Tea Cake have evolved from the bright green and gray-green tones of a young tea into a beautiful blend of yellow-brown, dark green, and chestnut hues. The appearance reflects a white tea entering its mature stage while still retaining youthful vitality.

At this point in its aging journey, the tea offers a compelling balance between youth and maturity. The liquor retains some of the freshness associated with younger white teas while gaining the smoothness and depth that develop with age. It is no longer as brisk and lively as a one- or two-year-old tea, yet it has not fully developed the medicinal, jujube-like aromas and deep reddish liquor often found in teas aged seven to ten years or more.
