Black Tea, known in China as hong cha or red tea, is called Dian Hong when produced in Yunnan. When hand-rolled into a spiral shape during processing, it is referred to as Golden Snail (Jin Luo).

Yunnan – The Tea-Growing Region

Yunnan, in southwestern China, is mountainous and misty, with an exceptionally favorable ecosystem. It produces high-quality teas—including Pu-erh, green, black, and white—all from the Yunnan large-leaf variety.

Key distinction:

  • Processing techniques
  • Degree of fermentation (teas with over 80% fermentation are classified as black tea)

History of Yunnan Black Tea

Yunnan black tea originates from Fengqing County. Since 1939, this tea region has led Yunnan’s premium black tea series with its rich aroma, resilience to multiple infusions, and honeyed sweetness.

Historical records show that around 1958, exporting one ton of Fengqing black tea could be exchanged for ten tons of steel.

Growing Conditions of Yunnan Golden Snail Black Tea

Our Yunnan Golden Snail Black Tea (Dian Hong Jin Luo) comes from high-mountain gardens in Fengqing at 1,700 meters above sea level.

The area has:

  • Average annual temperature of 18–22°C
  • Large day-night temperature differences
  • Dense forests
  • Rich humus layers from fallen leaves and grass, creating fertile soil

Tea Tree Characteristics

Thanks to these natural conditions, the tea trees grow tall with strong buds and full leaves. Even when developing 5–6 leaves, the foliage remains tender. Its tea polyphenols and alkaloids rank among the highest in Chinese teas.

Dry Leaves Appearance

The dry leaves, as seen in photos from our physical teahouse, are black and gold, covered with fine hairs. In professional tasting, this is known as “visible fuzz” (xian hao)—a hallmark of high-grade tender buds, indicating fresh, sweet flavors in the cup.

Under light, the tea hairs are clearly visible in the liquor.

Tea Liquor & Flavor Profile

The brewed tea offers a complex aroma of floral, fruity, and honey notes. The taste is rich, fresh, and full-bodied, with layered complexity.

Each infusion maintains consistent flavor, and the tea can be brewed more than ten times.
