Lapsang Souchong (Zhengshan Xiaozhong) is considered the ancestor of black tea and is recognized as the oldest black tea in the world. It originated in the Wuyi Mountain region of Fujian Province, China, and was first crafted in the mid-16th century.
The name "Zhengshan Xiaozhong" carries deep significance: "Zhengshan" means "authentic Wuyi Mountain," highlighting its origin, while "Xiaozhong" refers to the small-leaf tea trees used to produce it. In China, it is called "red tea" because both the brewed leaves and tea liquor are red. Internationally, it is referred to as "black tea" due to the black color of the dried tea leaves.
The production process of Lapsang Souchong is unique, involving key steps such as picking, withering, rolling, fermenting, and roasting. Originally, pinewood smoking was introduced to enhance the tea's durability for long-distance transportation, imparting its signature smoky aroma.
Our "Lapsang Souchong" Black Tea (Zhengshan Xiaozhong) comes from the authentic origin. As a classic representative of Chinese black tea (loose-leaf tea), it features amber-colored liquor with a rich, sweet flavor balanced by prominent pine smoke and fruity notes. The tea leaves are reddish-brown, soft, and bright, reflecting their high quality.
